Vicky Smallman
Panelist: Contingent Academic Labor: State of the Profession

Vicky Smallman is an organizer and activist, currently employed as Professional Officer - Organizing for the Canadian Association of University Teachers. A former chair of the Canadian Federation of Students (Ontario), she has served as president of the Canadian Union of Educational Workers (Local 6, representing teaching assistants and part-time instructors at McMaster University) and on the national executive board of the CUEW. She has long been active in building networks for graduate student and academic labour activists in North America, through the Graduate Student Caucus of the Modern Language Association and the Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor. She is a member of the Editorial Board of Workplace, an on-line journal on academic labor sponsored by the MLA Graduate Student Caucus.

She is near completion of a PhD in English from McMaster University, has an M.A. from University College, Dublin in Anglo-Irish Literature, and a B.A. in English and Celtic Studies from St. Francis Xavier University. Before joining the CAUT staff, she worked for a variety of labor, political and advocacy organizations, including the Ontario Confederation of Faculty Associations, the Canadian Council for International Co-operation and the New Democratic Party of Canada.
