COCAL IV UPDATE #2
Hi Everyone,
I hope you all enjoyed/are still enjoying the holidays. I have a few
quick tidbits to share regarding the conference.
CONFERENCE DRAWS ACTIVISTS FROM AROUND THE
NATION AND CANADA
Attendance has reached 100 people. We now have folks coming from 11
states, Washington, D.C., and several Canadian Provinces.
I received the following message the day before Christmas:
-----------
I have just found out about the conference. We
have been locked in a struggle at El Paso Community College for three years. We
receive no benefits and are paid less than $2000 per course, which is less than
40 % of what the average full time instructor receives. We need help and we
need to be among those who understand the plight of the part time faculty. We
will be there!

STUDENT ACTIVISTS TO ATTEND COCAL IV
Besides the many well known faculty activists who
will be attending the conference, we are very excited to have student activists
joining the movement. Students for Justice from DeAnza College have
offered to help with videography. Also, Philip Gibson from Pasadena City
College will be participating in the Campus Coalition breakout session.
Philip, you might remember, is the student Alexis Moore alerted us to a couple
of weeks ago. Philip was recently highlighted in the The Chronicle of
Higher Education (Dec. 8th issue) for his study of the salary gap between
administrators and the average part-time faculty member working 60 percent of a
full-time schedule at Pasadena City College.
THE AGENDA ONLINE
If you haven't looked at the agenda recently, you
might want to visit the CPFA website. There are now links to many of the
organizations represented by breakout leaders and panelists and sponsors and
co-sponsors. Also, by reading the bios of the participants, you will see
that a wealth of academic labor knowledge and expertise will be gathering in
San Jose.

ONE PART-TIMER'S LETTER
Sarah is a part-time faculty member who quite
poignantly expresses the anger, fear, and disappointment that perhaps we all
feel at one time or another as marginalized members of our respective
institutions.
